This is the Otus bakkamoena or the Otus lettia or Otus angelinae, I'm not sure. Hmm.. it's difficult to identify a bird, or in this case, an owl.

These owls live all over South Asia (from India and South China to Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc). I made this shot at the bird market in Yogyakarta (Central Java), where you can find everything with wings and also other exotic animals like snakes, geckos and bats.

From since I was a child, I always had this uncomfortable and sad feeling when watching animals in cages. It was no different here. An animal just doesn't belong in a cage.

absolutely agree that an animal just doesn't belong in a cage. And this owl, with its sad look, is here to prove that. Great photo!

wow. she (he?) is so beautiful but those EYES look so forlorn to be in this cage. heartwrenching to witness. owls are my little one's animal totem, i think.

-- Seen in my contacts' photos. (?)
