Me and Barbara have celebrated new year in Venice, Italy. After partying in my hometown all those years, I felt it was time for a change and we haven't regret this decision for one second during the entire stay. We arrived on the 31st and stayed for a few days afterwards. This allowed me to shoot pictures of abandoned streets (as we all know: all is quiet on new year's day), and this is something you don't get to see often when you travel to Venice :)
Since April 2008 I have been seriously bitten by the strobist bug, so I was honestly wondering if I could still shoot in natural and low light conditions and deliver interesting or beautiful shots without the aid of external strobes. So this was the first time that I could really thoroughly test the capabilities of my D700. How were the camera and the Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 lens going to perform in near darkness, with high ISO settings, without strobes, without a tripod even?
This first image is not the best one, not even close, but I love it and it's perfect as the first photo of 2010. It was shot half an hour before the new year, on the Piazza San Marco, in the centre of Venice.

P.S. Oh yes, I almost forgot: This is no HDR, I didn't change the colors, didn't improve contrast, didn't add sharpness, no noise-filter has been used.. this is straight from the camera. And this is a hand-held shot, no tripod.What do you think of "Close Encounters in Venice"?

It's shots like this that make my decision to buy the D700 (hopefully this year) a good one. I know it's the photographer that makes the shot, and this is a great composition, but what this camera is capable of is mind blowing. A belated Happy New Year to you :)

Knappe foto, zeker als ge weet dat er niks aan bijgewerkt is of geen speciale belichting gebruikt. De titel is ook goed gekozen :)

Venice in the "off season" is perhaps the only time I would go. I went there in late Nov and it was awesome just walking around the streets without that many people around. Looking forward to more shots of Venezia from you.
